The School of Business Management and Finance is the largest School at the University. We presently have some 1800 students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The School has two main departments: the Department of Accounting, Finance and Economics and the Department of Business Management and Law. It offers a range of academic programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Programmes are designed and put-on offer to local and foreign students, increasingly from Africa, in specialised areas of Management, Marketing, Law, Accounting, Banking, Finance, Economics, Procurement, Logistics and Transport. The programmes are rigorously pitched to ensure that students and learners are well prepared for their future careers or contribute to their professional development in the private and public sector alike.
Through its strategic partnership with the government, the School also develops tailor-made short-courses and executive courses in fields of management support and administration, public finance, procurement, amongst others. Our mission is to develop human resource capability for both the public and private sectors so that they have competent and effective human resources to drive the business operations. We also aim to respond to our stakeholders’ demands and to constantly adapt to meet their respective skills gap, training and research needs. Over the years the School faculties have developed their areas of competences to add value to our stakeholders through the transfer of knowledge and expertise. To add credibility to our programmes and as part of quality assurance, the School relies on a pool of highly qualified full-time teaching staff, local industry specialists and overseas professors who act as external moderators and PhD supervisors. The School shares good networking with local authorities namely, Bank of Mauritius (BoM), Ministry of Finance and Economic Development (MOFED), Ministry of Civil Service Affairs and Administrative Reforms (MCSAR), Financial Services Commission (FSC), Human Resources Development Council (HRDC), National Productivity and Competitiveness Council (NPCC), Association of HR Professionals (AHRP), Public Procurement Office (PPO). On the other hand, private sector collaboration with the School comprises ACCA Mauritius Branch, Institute of Chartered Accountant England and Wales, Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and the CFA Research Society. The School is a member of the AMBA Development Network and this membership also gives students access to key resources as part of the Business Graduate Association.
In 2015, the School’s UG programmes underwent a major review and one of the innovative elements introduced as part of the curriculum was the Community Learning and Engagement (CLEn) which is a credit based mandatory component. The CLEn initiative strives to integrate community learning and social responsibility as a cornerstone of undergraduate education. It is a field-based initiative which aims at promoting civic engagement in community organisations among the SBMF undergraduate students who have direct off-campus experience contributing to their intellectual, personal, and professional development. The CLEninitiative is in line with the objectives of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 4) which is “to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” and aligns with the 2017 Mauritius Roadmap for SDG Implementation. Every year some 350-400 SBMF undergraduate students validate the component by engaging with over 80 NGOs in the Republic of Mauritius.
